and elderly falling between the cracks

i graduated high school at 16 and had i been older
would've become either a morgue attendant or butcher's boy.
shortly thereafter i had,what i now
recognize was my first of several nervous breakdowns...
but today's blog is about chess.
i was taught and schooled in chess by
the NYC YMCA Jr.Chess Champion
himself Waddell Holmes,
who luckily went to the same high school
and was black and nerdy before it was cool.
we played over 500 games and i won one,
yes one but i never gave up and i leaned a lot
so much so that i destroyed all but
the better players i faced both before and after
my breakdowns.
when i worked
at thew Clift Hotel for nine years
there was a bellman who was banging
my BFF Kim and he thot he could play,
he was wrong on a lot of things
including his ex who was exactly like The Mirage
(i.e. psychotic on occasion)
anyway we were halfway into
a game in the lobby late one night
when a guest walked in and glanced
at the board and told the bellman he had already lost,
which he had and did.
this is not me bragging about my chess playing
when we had The Stone Boyz as soon
as they reached the age of reason,
about five or six, i tried to teach them both
Critical Thinking and chess.
so i always won, one day
Z Boy asked how come i
never "let" him win
and i was happy to explain
"because Life is not like that,
you have to do your best
even when you lose"...
i think this attitude has helped me
cope with being disabled
maybe it can help you too?

my ex The Mirage, the last in a line of wimmin
incurious of my life in any details
as they were too self absorbed in their own
to see anything beyond whatever desired persona
fit their needs
told my sons, The Stone Boyz,
that i carried weapons during my five years of cab driving
because i was "fat & paranoid"
i would like to think she was too ashamed to admit
her ignorance on the topic than to think
that she just made up shit
to suit her current needs
much like our failed marriage...
for the record,
yes i was "fat" the first time
i broke 300 pounds was then
but "paranoid"? hardly.
actually i had been on the fence about carrying weapons.
yes i had a heavy steel 5 cell flashlight given to me for a fare
but other than that and my street skills leaned in
the Gladiator School of Harlem-nada.
now when you drive a cab at the end of each shift
you sit around a picnic table and count yuour fares and tips
and trade war stories about traffic and deadbeat fares,
basically you vent.
one night a kid from Fresno was venting his disappointment,
a young kid in his 20s,he and his wife had moved to frisco and it had
broken them apart plus he was not cut out to be a cabdriver (as few are)
so it was his last shift driving then he was going home to Fresno and sanity....
yes, just like any cliche bad movie he was shot to death that nite
plus the killers,uncaught, never found where he stashed his money
on his body. so...the next nite i was packing a
13 shot Browning High Power automatic
and a 2 shot 22LR derringer
which i had cleverly sewn into my bomber jacket
by cutting up an old pair of jeans to make interior holsters.
as an extra touch, given what other drivers had said,
the derringer pocket/holster was sewn in
facing underneath my armpit to fire
directly into the backseat into any
would be robber.
i was never robbed per se and
discoverd a new found civility when
encountering ignorance,drunks and boors.
only pulled my big weapon 3-4 times and
only when my life or those of
my passengers where in danger.
having been bullied as a child i did not
become a bully in return
i am better than that
for all my flaws.
i was NOT a cowboy
paranoid or
gunslinger
just aware of
the dangers.
so there.

i do take some cold comfort that
there are those out there online
with a more gloomy outlook on Life than mine
then i watch the news.
i have been ranting several years now about how
the Untied Snakes have become Neo-Rome
so leave it to the GOP to top me
and my most dire predictions.

Your Call (a frisco call-in show)
they were bemoaning the fate of cab drivers,
which i was from 75-80 and warped as such,
in the face of smartphone ride-sharing APPS
which Gov.Turkey Jerky Brown legalized last week.
it was...nostalgic in so much as DARPA and Google
with their driverless tech will render both cabbies
and truckers obsolete possibly within my lifetime.
think the original Total Recall had a scene with a robot cabbie
whatever.
here in Paradise the weather
has gone from mid 90s to mid 60s
within a span of a few days.
WOW am typing this in a sweatshirt and winter kilt
with the heat on.
am enjoying Al Jazeera America more and more

did i mention that we went to war with two Arab countries
over 3,000+ dead on 9-11 but
Wayne LaPierre and John Boner
have no problerm with 30,000 dead
from gun violence per annum.
